The Green University Initiative
The "Green University" initiative aims to plant 100,000 seedlings and establish a green cover over an area of 24,000 square meters within the university campus. This initiative seeks to contribute to the sustainability of green spaces in the cities, centers, and villages of Al-Kharj, enhance vegetation cover, and improve the quality of life. The initiative aligns with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, to expand and promote the concept of afforestation across all sectors of society.
Afforestation and green spaces not only add aesthetic and health benefits but also foster a sense of well-being. The Green University program plays a vital role in improving the quality of life, potentially boosting motivation in the educational sphere, and encouraging faculty, staff, and students to perform well and excel. Some of the university's key achievements in this area include:
- Expansion of Tree Planting: The university has planted approximately 1,800 trees. These trees provide environmental benefits, including producing around 100,000 kilograms of oxygen annually and absorbing approximately 30,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide each year. The trees planted include palms, royal poinciana, Neem, and Ficus trees.
- Increase in Green Spaces: The green spaces now cover an area of 50,000 square meters, contributing to increased humidity, reducing dryness, and lowering temperatures by more than 6 degrees Celsius. These green areas also help in minimizing and blocking dust particles in the university city's surroundings.
