Prof. Amani Awad Drugs Professor and Vice Dean of Pharmacy College has obtained a patent from the European Office of the innovations for discovering a new treatment for Leishmaniasis. The patent was obtained on 22/10/2014.
In this research, Prof. Awad was the key researcher and she was been assisted by a team form King Saud University. The team was consisted from Hayfaa Ziala, Dr. Riham Melagi and Prof. Mohammad Zain, besides, Dr. Salah Qasoumi and Dr. Ibtisam Olian.
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by single-celled parasites that parasitize vertebrates, primarily on mammals. It infect humans causing various injuries. Many drugs treat this disease, but they are not effective and they have dangerous side effects.
It is known that the Fungicide affects Bacteria and Microbes, on this study, the anti-influence of two Fungicide (Drechslera rostrate and Eurotium tonpholium) were tested after separating the compounds responsible on anti-influence. This study was conducted on lab rats and approved that the discovered drug cured the infected rat within 18 days, while the old treatment (Pentostam) took a 28 without any improvement.
In addition, the toxic study of the discovered drug on lab rats proved that the drug is safe and has no toxic impact even in large dosage. It also has no impact on liver and kidneys after 14 days usage.
