Under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, awarding ceremony of Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water was held at the United Nations headquarters, in New York.
The prize was awarded by the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al-Fadhli to the winners.
Award of surface water was awarded to Dr. Wolfbed Brocert from Cornell University, the USA for developing a new theory capable of producing unprecedented estimates of evaporation from the surface of the earth.
Another award was awarded for developing and applying key theoretical and software tools that accurately describe the mechanism of water transport, in subterranean groundwater systems.
Alternative Water Resources award was awarded to Dr. Omar Yaghi of the University of California, Berkeley, and Dr. Evelyn Wang of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the invention of a solar device using an innovative organic metal frame to get water directly from the atmosphere. The team of Dr. Hull and Dr. Eduardo Borjemayo of the Institute of Environmental Change at the University of Oxford - the United Kingdom won the Water Resources Management and Protection Award.
The ceremony was attended by the members of the Board of Directors of the King Saud University, Dr. Badran bin Abdul Rahman Al Omar, the Governor of the General Corporation for Desalination of Water Water, Ali bin Abdul Rahman Al-Hazmi, the Director of the University of Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz, Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Hamed, The Secretary General of the Award and the General Supervisor of the Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water and Desert Research at King Saud University, Dr. Abdulmalik bin Abdulrahman Al-Sheikh, a number of ambassadors of countries accredited to the United Nations, and a number of scientists and professors.
